When running Postmatic and someone leaves a new comment on your site you’ll get a notification of the comment as an email. We are working on improving this comment notification template to include more context of the larger conversation.
Option One: The comment is most important
The first version places emphasis on the new comment that has been added by placing it at the very top of the email. Below that we can see the context of the conversation by reading the 3 most recent comments in order of latest at the top and older towards the bottom.
Pros:
- The new content (the comment) is front and center, located at the top of the email. No scrolling to see what’s new.
- Since the business is all at the top, more of the context of the conversation (3, or even 4 previous comments) can be displayed below.
Cons:
- The order of the comments is the opposite of what blog readers expect and are used to. As you go down the page, the comments get older.
Option Two: The conversation is most important
The second option places the emphasis on the larger conversation at hand. The conversation is presented in the style most familiar with blog readers: older comments at the top (in this case 2), most recent comment at the bottom leading to the native email reply box/button/prompt.
Pros:
- The flow of the conversation makes more sense. The first person, the second, the third, and now you!
- It’s more inviting to add a comment.
Cons:
- The new comment is buried down deep. If the previous comments are long, it could get very buried.
I’d like your opinion on how to display the conversation within the email.
I’m struggling with making a decision on this. Care to share your thoughts and opinions? Which makes the most sense to you? Thanks!
